FAQs About The CDCP
An exciting and groundbreaking Health Canada initiative, the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is designed to help millions of Canadians access smile-saving oral health services from coast to coast. (As of June 2024, applications are now open for seniors 65 and older, kids under the age of 18, and adults with a valid disability tax credit certificate. All remaining eligible Canadians can apply in 2025 at Canadian Dental Care Plan – Apply – Canada.ca.)
So, how does the CDCP work? Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions our team has received:
- Who qualifies? You must meet four criteria to qualify: You must be a Canadian citizen, not have dental insurance, have an adjusted net income of less than $90,000, and have filed your tax return for the previous year.
- Are all services covered? Unfortunately not, though the plan does cover a wide variety of preventive and restorative services, including check-ups, cleanings, fillings, fluoride treatment, dental sealants, root canal therapy, extractions, dentures, deep scaling, and more. It’s important to note that some services will require preauthorization before a treatment can be provided.
- Is the plan free? The plan reimburses a portion of the cost based on outlined CDCP fees and your adjusted family net income. If your adjusted income is $70,000 or more, you may need to pay additional charges or co-payments to your dentist. Additional charges will also be required if the cost of your service(s) is more than established CDCP fees or if you choose to move forward with a treatment or procedure not covered by the plan. It’s very important that you ask us about any cost(s) not covered by the CDCP to ensure you know what your financial responsibility will be before following through on treatments.
