Wisdom Teeth Extraction in Vancouver, BC
Regardless of what you and many other people may believe, tooth extraction is not done unnecessarily. Tooth removal is done when a certain tooth is far too damaged to be restored by other forms of dentistry like fillings, crowns, or a root canal.
Our Main Street dentist will be able to help you throughout your appointment if this treatment is something that you need. They’ll ensure you’re relaxed and informed about the preparation, process, and aftercare steps.

Teeth Extractions: What are They?
A tooth extraction is the process of carefully removing a tooth from its socket in order to boost your oral health. There are several reasons why your dentist may recommend this service; some of the most common reasons are that the tooth is severely unhealthy due to an infection or fragmentation, your mouth is overcrowded, or your tooth is impacted.
Types of Extraction:
The two main modes of extractions are simple and surgical.
Simple extractions are done on teeth that have fully erupted past the gum line and is a non-surgical treatment. Surgical (or complex) extractions are done on teeth that have only partially pushed up past the gum line or not at all. Wisdom teeth removal is the most well-known type of surgical extraction.
Wisdom teeth are called your “third molars,” residing at the very back of your mouth. Most people between the ages of 17-25 have then removed. Others won’t need to have this done, and an even smaller number of patients don’t have wisdom teeth at all.
What Happens During the Appointment
Before any official dental work is carried out, your dentist will study your oral cavity. They’ll do so via x-rays and a physical assessment. Remember, dentists don’t just go around yanking out random teeth! They will talk to you about your unique situation, needs and goals, and then advise the most effective course of action.
The general steps of a tooth extraction are as follows:
- Anesthesia – When you’re settled in, a local anesthetic is provided to keep you from feeling any pain during the procedure. The injection is administered near the tooth.
- Extraction – Special dental instruments are used to access and extract the tooth. If you’re undergoing wisdom teeth removal in Main Street, tissue and bone debris will need to be cleared away. Once your dentist has a clear path to the tooth, forceps are used to rock it back and forth gently before finally removing it.
- Cleaning – The socket is cleaned once the tooth is gone to ensure no debris amalgamates there.
- Stitching and Gauze – Your dentist may stitch the socket shut to encourage healing and prevent infection. A small piece of gauze will also be added over the site; bite down on it gently to keep it in place.
- Post-Procedure Instructions – The dentist will provide aftercare instructions, such as what foods to eat and what to avoid while your mouth heals – make sure you follow them!
Once the procedure is completed, you may need to see your dentist for a follow-up session so they can see how you’re doing. If you’re experiencing any difficulties or problems, let them know.
